It was first described in1837 and after Variscia, the historical name of the Vogtland, in Germany where it was found. It is also known as  Utahlite, Barrandite, Bolivarite and Lucinite. Variscite Geological Description:
Variscite is a hydrated aluminium phosphate mineral with a hardness of 3.5 to 5. It is formed by direct deposition from phosphate-bearing water that has reacted with aluminium-rich rocks and occurs as fine-grained masses in nodules, cavity fillings, and crusts. Variscite can be found in Utah and Navada, in the USA, in Germany, Queensland inAustralia, Poland, Spain and Brazil.
