Jade History and Uses:
The name Jade is derived from the Spanish term “piedra de jyada”, meaning stone of the loin, named by the Spanish conquistadors who brought it back to Europe from Mesoamerica. The French translation was misprinted as pierre le jade and Jade is the term now used to describe two different types of stone. Jadeite, the South American and Burmese stone and Nephrite a form of Actinolite, named from the Latin “lapis nephrictus” meaning kidney stone which came to Europe from China in the 17th century. The New Zealand green stone or pounamu is also a form of Nephrite. Nephrite usually occurs in three colours white, deep green and creamy brown whereas Jadeite ranges in shades from green blue, leafy green, green black, emerald green or lavender. In prehistoric times jade was used to make tools and weapons and in later cultures it was carved for its beauty into talismans, religious objects and jewellery. The Chinese revere Jade for its properties of longevity and protection, in Maori tradition it is recognised as a treasure, having “mana”, a prestige of it’s own. It is carved into tools, talismans and ornaments and handed down through the generations and used to seal important agreements.
