History and Uses

Zebra Stone is a trade name. Different types of stones with zebra-like patterning have been variously named Zebra Rock, Zebra Marble, Zebra Jasper. These stones can have a background color of grey, greenish-gray, white, brown, or tan with black, darker gray, brick, or brown stripes, or be pinkish and brown. The white with black variety is sometimes called Zebra Marble and also carries the energies of marble. The green-gray variety is usually a Serpentine, and carries energies of serpentine as well. The brown varieties with brown to pinkish colouring are types of Jasper or Quartz mixes, which have energies of those stones or combinations.

Geological Description

The pink and brown Australian Zebra Stone is a type of Jasper which was formed 600 million years ago in the Upper Proterozoic era or Pre Cambrian period. Geologists have not been able to explain the origin of this rock or how it was formed. The red stripes embodying the colours and spirit of outback Australia are coloured by ferric (iron) oxide.
