History and Uses
Tanzanite is a rare gemstone which was first discovered in 1967 in the Merelani Hills in Tanzania, East Africa. It was named Tanzanite by Tiffany and Co jewellers of New York but scientists refer to it as Blue Zoisite. When it is heated to above 900 degrees F it changes colour from yellow or brown to shades of beautiful blue and violet.
Geological Description
This crystal is a member of the Zoisite family, a calcium aluminium silicate mineral with a hardness of 6.5 to 7. It was first discovered in 1967 in Tanzania, Africa, and it is from here that the name was derived.
