History and Uses

Spodumene is the name of a family of lithium based crystals. The white, clear, colourless, yellow or grey are referred to as Spodumene. The pink or purple coloured crystals contain manganese and are called Kunzite and the green ones containing chromium are named Hiddenite.

Spodumene was first described in 1800 when a deposit was found in Sweden. The name relates to the opaque grey colour of the stone when it is processed and is derived from the Greek word “spodumenos” meaning burnt to ashes. Lithium is extracted from Spodumene to use in ceramics, mobile phone and car batteries and anti anxiety medications.

Geological Description

Spodumene is a lithium aluminum silicate mineral with a hardness of 7. It is the yellow form of Kunzite and Hiddenite, found in Pakistan, Australia, Afghanistan, Madagascar, USA and Brazil.
