Iolite Crystal Healing Properties

Iolite is thought to be a wonderful meditation aid as it may help to calm an overactive mind. It is believed to activate psychic gifts and connect us with higher guidance. As such, providing us with a clearer vision and emotional distance from which to perceive difficult life situations. Furthermore, it may empower us to envision solutions to seemingly insurmountable problems and use discernment to act on this insight wisely.

In addition, it is felt to link our conscious mind with our intuitive inner knowing. As such, it may enhance our ability to communicate this higher knowledge, so it is a powerful ally for astrologers, tarot readers or mediums.

On a physical level, it is believed to help stimulate memory, improve eyesight and aid with restful sleep.

History and Uses

The name Iolite comes from the Greek word for violet, referring to this stone’s violet colour. It was discovered in 1813 and named Cordierite, after the French geologist Louis Cordier. It has also been named Dichroite, which is a Greek word meaning “two-coloured rock”. This is in reference to its ability to appear to be different colours when seen from different angles, especially with polarised light.

Due to this phenomenon, it was referred to as the “Vikings’ Compass”, Vikings used it to determine the direction of the sun on overcast days.

It has also been called Water Sapphire and the stone of the Muses because it is thought to activate visions and creativity.

Traditionally, it has been used to enable such practices as astral travel, shamanic journeying, dimensional work, inner work, past life (particularly associated with the Cathars and Knights Templar) and alternate life work.

Geological Description

Iolite is a magnesium, aluminium silicate mineral with a hardness of 7 to 7.5. It is found in Australia, Brazil, Madagascar, Burma, India and Sri Lanka.
