Cuprite History and Uses:
The name Cuprite is derived from the Latin word cuprum, meaning copper because of its high copper content. This crystal was first described in 1845 but Cuprite crystals have been found on ancient Roman and Celtic copper and bronze objects. Gem quality Cuprite is very rare and is called Ruby Copper because of its beautiful deep red colour. Cuprite ranges in color from carmine red, red-brown, gray-black to a very deep red and has a reflective surface and metallic lustre. It can be found in combination with other copper bearing minerals such as Malachite and Azurite. A beautiful stone combining Cuprite and Chrysocolla comes from the Sonora Valley in Northern Mexico and is referred to as Sonoran Sunset or Sonora Sunrise stone.

Cuprite Geological Description:
Cuprite is a copper oxide mineral with a hardness of 3.5 to 4. Cuprite forms in oxidised parts of copper deposits and often occurs in association with chrysocolla, malachite and azurite. Fine specimens of Cuprite are found in the Congo and Namibia in Africa, and Arizona in the USA.
